Today is set to be the last day that Egged bus riders can pay the driver for a ticket on the bus. Starting Friday, June 8, drivers will no longer handle payments for paper tickets, and only Rav Kav cards will be accepted. Here's what you need to know, with information gathered with the help of Jerusalem Bus Map.
1. So, no one can pay on the bus?
Senior Citizens will still be allowed to buy tickets in cash on the bus. Also, from what we understand, you can still buy an anonymous Rav Kav card on the bus itself for NIS 5, and then add the amount for your ticket to that while on the bus. In other words, if you don't have a Rav Kav, you can still ride the bus by paying for your fare PLUS an anonymous card. So, if you arrive at the bus without your card, you still have an option.
2. Do I need the new card with the chip?
Yes. Here's what it looks like:
3. Where can I get a Rav Kav?
Cards can be bought at kiosks spread throughout the city, as well as post offices, Cofix chain stores and Maayan 2000 branches. Cards can be reloaded at 300 devices around the city, at 46 loading points at the light rail stations, and other selected spots. Cards can also be loaded via app or PC using a card reader sold for NIS 5. If you have an Android phone that is NFC enabled, you can install the "Rav Kav Online" application and you DO NOT need to purchase the Rav Kav card reader. Telephone sales will also be available soon.
You can buy the card reader at one of the Rav Kav service centers:
