Bennett, Biden discuss ‘growing Iranian aggression’

The Israeli prime minister and the U.S. president spoke Sunday night by phone. The leaders discussed steps to block the Iranian nuclear program, tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and America's operation to eliminate ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and U.S. President Joe Biden spoke late Sunday evening.

The leaders spoke about regional challenges, growing Iranian aggression and possible steps to block the Iranian nuclear program, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The call came just hours after Bennett warned at a weekly cabinet meeting that the deal being negotiated with Iran in Vienna “will damage [Israel’s] ability to deal with the nuclear program.”

“The greatest threat against the State of Israel is Iran,” Bennett said. “Whoever thinks that an agreement will increase stability—is mistaken. It will temporarily delay enrichment, but all of us in the region will pay a heavy, disproportionate price for it.”

Bennett also congratulated Biden on the operation to eliminate ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, the PMO said, noting that “the world is now a safer place thanks to the courageous operation of the U.S. forces.”

The two leaders also discussed the brewing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Bennett also thanked the president and his administration for America’s “steadfast support of Israel,” including the decision to fund the Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Bennett and Biden met in August in Washington and again in October at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow. On the call, Bennett invited Biden and his wife to visit Israel and the leaders agreed to be in regular contact.
