Some people are good at fasting, while others dread it. No matter which type you are, a bit of planning ahead will help ensure that you feel your best throughout the fast.
Before the Fast:
Drink ample water from several days before the fast to make sure you enter the fast well-hydrated.
If you have a caffeine addiction, taper down a week before the fast, and try to go without caffeine from several days before.
Check in with your doctor if you are pregnant or ill. If your doctor tells you not to fast, listen to him and don't try to do more. All halachic opinions say that the decision of a trusted doctor overrules the ruling of a rabbi regarding fasting.
The Day before the Fast:
Drink a LOT- some recommend drinking a glass of water every hour if you can handle it.
Eating water-heavy fruits, like watermelon and grapes, is also good.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol and salty foods.
East normal-sized meals at regular intervals. Don't skip breakfast, and don't start the pre-fast meal on a full stomach.
Emphasize complex carbohydrates (bread, potato, rice, pasta) in your diet. The final meal should also include some proteins.
Don't overeat right before the fast starts. Stuffing yourself with more won't make the fast any easier, but it could make you feel bloated and heavy.
Leave room for water at the last meal.
Take it easy- don't stress before the fast.
After the fast:
Be smart- don't stuff your face as soon as the fast is over.
Ideally, start with a fruit or glass of fruit juice to break the fast.
Eat a reasonable portion, then take a half-hour break before you decide to eat more.
